2008年の金融危機は公的財政危機をもたらし、緊縮財政は、ヨーロッパとアメリカにおける公的政策の新しい原理となった。しかしながら、現在の緊縮財政は、雇用と社会福祉における重要な保護を切り崩し、ジェンダー平等政策を後回しにすることによって、ジェンダー平等に向かう過去の前進を失うリスクを犯している。この本は、最も深刻な調整問題に直面する9つの事例研究を行い、雇用と福祉システムにおけるジェンダー平等に対する結果を突き止め、経済的危機とそれに続く緊縮財政政策がどのようにヨーロッパとアメリカの女性に影響を与えたかを明らかにする、最初の試みである。
この本の各章は、景気後退における女性を分析するための、女性の地位の変化と現在の緊縮財政の状況を考慮に入れる共通の枠組みを採用している。発見されたのは、金融危機の直接的な後遺症のなかで、男女の雇用格差は減少したということである（しかし、それは男性の雇用地位の劣化のためであって、女性についての改善ではないのだが）。状況は、女性の労働に対する需要と、働く母親をサポートするサービスへのアクセスに対してネガティブな効果をすでにもっていた緊縮財政政策によって変化させるようにお膳立てされている。それにも関わらず、女性らに対する無償の家事労働への需要が増加している時期であっても、女性は有償労働へのコミットメントを強めているのである。
未来への展望は暗い。現在の政策は、当初危機をもたらした失敗したメカニズムと同様のものを強化しようとしており、ケアに対するサポートの社会的投資の長期的な増加を停滞させるか、あるいはその流れを逆行させるものである。この本は、ジェンダー平等に対する事例が危機から脱出する一つの道筋に対する前進的な計画の中心になるように主張するものである。
