この本で検討されているのは、経済のグローバル化、技術変化、労働市場や製品市場に関する政策・制度が不平等に与える影響。経済のグローバル化や技術変化、政策・制度に関しても、さまざまな指標で検討されており、また「不平等」に関しても、フルタイム労働者間の賃金格差、労働者と失業者の間の格差、自営、フルタイム、パートタイムを含めた時の格差、世帯所得の不平等など、さまざまな側面から分析が行われている。
特に、制度・政策の効果は、時に、「不平等」の様々な側面に対して相反する効果を示す。たとえば、雇用保護規制の緩和はフルタイム労働者間の賃金格差を拡大するが、一方で、雇用を拡大することによって労働人口全体の所得不平等を縮小させる効果を持つ。

また、税制が所得再分配に与える効果なども検討されている。「不平等」に関しては、さまざまな方面からの分析・考察が必要である。
