この本の目的は、「対抗文化理論」（"oppositional culture theory"）を検証することである。この理論は、研究者やメディアの間で広く受け入れられているが、十分なデータを用いて、この理論のコアの部分が実証されているとはいえない。この理論は、白人と黒人の間の学業達成のギャップ（achievement gap）を説明する妥当性のある理論だろうか。
これまで何となく信じられてきた理論を、きちんと代表性のあるデータを用いて検証する、というのが筆者の方針。
結果として、「対抗文化理論」は黒人と白人の間のギャップを説明しないことを示す。
