2006年にニューヨーク大学で行われたカンファレンスでの発表をもとにした論文集。
「階級とは何か？」ということをめぐる議論。

「階級」は、社会学のコア概念の一つだけど、最近はアカデミックな雑誌のなかでほとんど使われない。
"class"ではなく、"inequality"、"stratification"、"family background"などが使われる。
"class"概念が何を意味するのか、どう定義されるのか、どう操作化されるのか、こういったことに関する長い議論があるにも関わらず、いまだ"class"概念は多様である。

では、"class"よりも"inequality"を使う方が好ましいか、というと、そうでもない。IntroductionでAnnette Lareau氏は以下のように述べる。

In my view...the term "class" has significant advantages over the term "inequality". Specifically, "class" does evoke a notion of groups or collectivities; this means that implicit in the term "class" is a notion of a form of social structure.

久しぶりにこの手の本を手に取ったが、やっぱり、答えのない問いを巡っているようで、もやもやする。

私も"class"は大事な概念だと思う。"inequality"と違うのは、"class"は"inequality"をまさに生み出すものだ、ということ。

しかし一方では、たとえば所得格差を生み出すものとしては、労働市場制度や労使関係が大事。しかし、階級研究は、労使関係も、労働市場制度も、これまであまりうまく取り扱ってこなかったんじゃないかなあ...
